I’m Zen from Japan.
Recently I have been busy and haven’t been able to update.
I’ll try harder from this month onwards.

Firstly, I introduce myself. It looks roughly like the following.

Age : completed master’s degree in 2021 (late 20s)
Major : Chemical Engineering
Occupation : Research and development job at a chemical manufacturer
Income : Late 200,000 yen
Investment policy : Focusing on index investment with NISA, and trying out various investments
Target : Millionaire

Assets amount disclosure (Mar. 2025)

Total assets amount

Amount of Zen’s total assets in Mar. 2025 is 15,080,906 yen. (100,426 USD)
The achievement rate to become a millionaire is 10%.
I still have a long way to go before I reach my goal of becoming a millionaire.

The breakdown is as follows.

In terms of Japanese yen, all assets except Japanese stocks were down compared to last month, so the overall balance was -244,820 yen.
On the other hand, in dollar terms, all assets except American stocks were up compared to last month due to the strong yen.
The overall balance was +2,234 USD.

How will the major change in my investment ratios made in December 2024 affect my total assets in the event of future stock market declines?

Let’s check the breakdown of each financial asset.

Japanese stocks

The Japanese stocks held by Zen were +1,160 USD compared to last month.
The trend of the Nikkei Average in dollar terms was as shown in the image below.

Charts provided by TradingView

The Nikkei average in March 2025 fell in the beginning of the month, then recovered towards the end of the month.

This month, there was a big drop on the 11th, and it is said that the cause was President Trump’s comments.
When interviewed by US media, President Trump did not deny the possibility of an economic recession.
As a result, the US market fell, which in turn caused the Nikkei average to fall.

Mr. Trump took office as president this year, and his comments have been causing chaos in the market.

I’ll write more about it below, but he’s also announced new tariff policies, so we need to be careful with what President Trump says.

Investment trust (S&P500)

I have accumulated the following investment trusts using the new NISA investment limit.
・三菱UFJ-eMAXIS Slim 米国株式(S&P500) 33,333 yen
・三菱UFJ-eMAXIS Slim バランス(8資産均等型) 10,000 yen

The investment trust I held was -99 USD compared to last month.
The additional reserve amount has been included in this month’s price, which shows that the decline in assets was significant.

The trend of S&P500 was as shown in the image below.
The blue line is the value in Japanese yen terms, and the orange line is the value in dollar terms.

Charts provided by TradingView

In March 2025, the S&P 500 recorded a significant drop.

As mentioned in the section on Japanese stocks, the decline on the 11th is said to be due to President Trump’s comments regarding an economic recession.

Among President Trump’s policies, the one that is having the biggest impact on the stock market is his tariff policy.

In early March, President Trump imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, and raised tariffs on imports from China to 20%.
In addition, on April 2nd, he announced a new policy to impose a flat 20% tariff on many imports.

These tariff policies are likely to have the following effects:
1. Rising consumer prices
2. Slowing economic growth
So the stock market is showing volatility.

I would like to continue saving while keeping a close eye on President Trump’s remarks.

Bonds

As for bonds, I hold iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond Market ETF (AGG).
The bonds I hold increased by +123 USD compared to last month.

This month’s AGG trend was as shown in the image below.

Charts provided by TradingView

AGG has a broad portfolio covering the entire bond market, so it has not seen the same volatility as the stock market.
However, short-term fluctuations have been observed in response to economic indicators and monetary policy outlooks in the bond market.

Until last year, with the inflationary trend, I didn’t feel any value in bonds at all, but in a market with such unpredictable fluctuations, I feel grateful for the stability of bonds.

It is difficult to fully predict future economic trends, so I would like to create a portfolio that can withstand any situation, even if it incurs some losses.

Exchange rate

This month’s USD/JPY trend was as shown in the image below.

Charts provided by TradingView

Like the stock market, the foreign exchange market also saw large fluctuations in the month due to President Trump’s comments, but the yen ultimately weakened slightly to around 151 yen.

This month’s expenses

This month’s credit card payment amount was 153,427 yen (1,022 USD).

My biggest expense this month was travel costs to Ehime.
I love hot springs and have been to Kusatsu Onsen and Kinosaki Onsen before, but I had never been to Dogo Onsen, so I went this time.

Dogo Onsen is known as the oldest hot spring in Japan, and is also said to have been the model for Spirited Away.
When I actually went there, the atmosphere was amazing.

所蔵:松山市

I also went to Shimonada Station, which used to be the station closest to the sea in Japan.
It’s a little far from Matsuyama city and Dogo Onsen, but the view of Shimonada Station with the station and the sea interwoven is one of a kind, so be sure to check it out!

When the stock market is volatile and assets are declining, I want to enjoy my daily life even if it means spending money.

Summary

This month saw a sharp decline in assets due to President Trump’s remarks.

I significantly reduced my cash ratio in December of last year,
so this latest crash has really hurt me.
I feel like I’m a shoeshine boy.

President Trump has only just taken office, and the risks of inflation and economic recession have not yet disappeared, but we hope that this drop is not the beginning of a crash.

This concludes my disclosure of my assets as of March 2025.
I’ve been busy with my work recently and I apologize for not being able to continue updating the blog.
I’ll try my best from next month.
See you next month.
